What Sets Us Apart?

Here at Hotel de Vie, we understand that when you’re searching for the ideal night away – whether on business or leisure – you’re looking for that little extra something; it could be an early breakfast, a beautiful interior, delicious teas and coffees or staff that make the place feel like a home away from home. That’s why we place so much emphasis on running the most comfortable, welcoming and attractive hotel we can. Here’s how we do it…

The Design

The reflection of a rose

Of course the hotel itself gives us a pretty good head start. The communal lounge and bar area is infused with Parisian style, and inspires a feeling of instant escapism upon check-in; while each room is individually designed in accordance with a different theme.  So whether you like the sound of the soft pastel colours which adorn the Victorian Dreams room or the luxurious and opulent style of the Scarlet Suite – complete with a bath you have to see to believe – we’re sure you’ll find a room you love.

Victorian Dreams

The Service

From the moment you arrive we aim to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Quite simply; we love Hotel de Vie, and we want you too as well.

As you enter the lounge you will see to your left our hot drinks station; here we provide a range of sixteen different Nespresso blends; strong, mild or decaf, over 20 different teas, and a variety of more unusual hot drinks; including Chai Latte, Camp Coffee, Bambu (a yummy coffee substitute made from organic Chicory, Figs, Cereals & Acorns) and hot chocolate – basically whatever takes your fancy!  We provide a range of different milks and there are also tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. We also serve a range of different lagers, wines, champagnes and spirits at our bar.

This theme of variety and choice is echoed throughout the hotel; from the option of matches or a lighter to get your candles burning, or ear plugs for the light sleepers among you. Our eclectic DVD library ensures our guests are kept entertained, while our glorious power showers and generous baths help visitors to relax.

The Food

Breakfast at Hotel de Vie

We really pride ourselves in attention to detail and our breakfasts are perhaps the best example of this. We cater for meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans, and will whip up a freshly prepared cooked breakfast, tailored to your tastes. Our food is all locally sourced and of the best quality; our bread is baked for us over night by our bakery just up the road, we source our eggs from local family run Collary Farm and our gluten free sausages come from our neighbourhood butchers, Morgans of Farnham. If you want to leave early because of a business meeting, or a flight, or for any other reason, then all you have to do is let us know, and we’ll arrange a continental breakfast for you.

The centre of the beautiful Georgian town of Farnham is just a ten minute walk away and is home to a wide variety of different places to while away an evening; from the chains we all know and love, to individually run restaurants and atmospheric pubs. But if you fancy a cosy night in, then we provide a delicious and eclectic evening meal menu, which you can enjoy in our lounge area, or in your room.

From start to finish we provide our guests with the best possible stay, and that’s why we’re Farnham’s number one rated hotel on Tripadvisor. The Hotel de Vie experience is too varied and individual to capture in writing; so make sure you book up a stay and experience it for yourself.

How do you like your coffee?

How do you like your coffee? Fresh or instant?

We know how much people love their coffee, and we appreciate how the nuances of flavour can make such a difference.

So, after various taste tastes in the past whilst choosing our current set up, we’d started to forget just how good our coffees can be.

Above, you can see an example of two black coffees.  Both are made with filtered water, both have a similar intensity of flavour, both were made at the same time, but clearly neither look (or taste) the same.

The coffee on the left was made using the ‘best’ instant coffee available (according to their spate of recent adverts), and the coffee on the right is just one of the standard coffees we have available to all our guests 24/7 on demand.

We have 16 different types of coffee available, all varying in the intensity and type of their flavour:

  • Indriya (powerful & spicy)
  • Ristretto (powerful & contrasting)
  • Arpeggio (intense & creamy)
  • Roma (full & balanced)
  • Fortissio (rich & intense)
  • Livanto (round & balanced)
  • Rosabaya (fruity & delicate)
  • Dulsao (sweet & smooth)
  • Cappricio (rich & distinctive)
  • Vivalto (complex & balanced)
  • Volutto (sweet & fruity)
  • Finezzo (floral & refreshing)
  • Cosi (light & lemony)
  • Decaf Intenso (dense & powerful)
  • Decaffeinato (fruity & delicate)
  • Decaffeinato lungo (light & full-flavoured)

Each coffee above can also be made in the following ways:

  • Espresso (standard 40ml, but can be made shorter or longer as desired)
  • Americano (espresso topped up with hot water)
  • Lungo (full cup)
  • Cappuccino (frothy hot milk)
  • Latte (non-frothy hot milk)

We have a wide range of sweeteners available too:

  • brown sugar
  • white sugar (we use castor sugar rather than granulated, because we think it works better)
  • Caramel and Chocolate syrup (both as used as various coffee shops),
  • Agave Syrup (a natural plant based sweetener),
  • truvia (another natural sweetener from the stevia leaf)
  • fruit sugar (pure fructose)

And then if you’d like to add milk, at the moment we offer a wide choice of those too!

  • organic semi-skimmed milk (from cows)
  • Coconut milk
  • Rice milk
  • Soya milk
  • Oat milk
  • Chocolate Oat milk
  • UHT milk pods (some people prefer it!)

Do you prefer tea or other hot drinks?

If you’re a tea drinker instead, we have over 20 different choices available (most of which are fair-trade organic varieties from dragon-fly teas)

And we have other hot drinks to choose from too, such as Chai Latte, Camp Coffee, Bambu (a delicious coffee substitute made from organic Chicory, Figs, Cereals & Acorns), etc.

It’s the details and the choice

As you can see, here at Hotel de Vie, we like to offer a great choice to our guests, because we believe in the most part, this provides you with a better nights’ stay.

This is just one small element of the thought we try to put into so many details of your stay with us.

We know our bread

We know our bread, and our eggs, and our sausages, and our bacon, and our apple juice, etc.

It’s the little differences around the hotel that make the bigger differences to our guests (so they keep telling us).

We’ve spent a long time, fine tuning virtually every aspect of our business, carefully selecting individual suppliers because they can offer the best for us, for a wide variety of reasons (and typically they’re not the cheapest either).

Our Bread

For example, our bread, is baked for us, to order, overnight, by a small independent bakery just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel (Ridgeway Bakery).  These are one of the VERY few bakeries that still make bread the traditional way (not just by adding water to a premade mix).

We then slice each loaf ourselves by hand, beacuse we believe the perfect slice for your breakfast is 15mm thick (most ‘extra thick sliced’ bread is just 10mm thick!).

We even have the bread made as a ‘sandwich loaf’ so it fits on your plate better, and tends to have a slightly softer crust which is better for toasting.

Did you know our average demand ratio for brown: white bread at the hotel is around 3:1!?

Our Eggs

We use a local farm (Collary Farm), who are a family run farm, producing only free range eggs (they actually teach their hens to lay the eggs in the barn, to make the collection by hand three times a day just that little bit easier).

These are delivered the day after they’ve been laid, to ensure freshness.

Our Meat

All of the meat for our breakfasts, is again sourced from a very local butchers (Morgans of Farnham).

The bacon is ‘smoked back bacon’, which again, even though it costs a little more than we can buy it from wholesalers, each slice is a leaner quality of meat, and consistently tastes great.

We tried a wide variety of cooking methods to get what our guests tell us is the best bacon they’ve had, and after a great deal of research, we settled on a commercial ‘contact grill’ set to 180 degress C (essentially a commercial version of a George Foreman grill).  This method, temperature and equipment, seals in the flavour, slightly crisps the outside of the bacon, leaves the middle of the thickness softer, and crisps up the white fat nicely.  Adding a little more time (cooked by sight) enables us to finish the bacon to our guests’ particular preference.  The grill is set on a shallow incline to also drain away any excess fat released during the cooking process, with the grill very lightly seasoned with a hand pumped aerosol of olive oil first, to minimise any sticking of the bacon to the cast iron cooking ridges).

Our sausages are also made especially for us, by our local butchers. These are gluten free ‘Glamorgan’ style sausages.  Beacuse they’re made just for us, enables us to control the very simple ingredients, with also excellent quality meat.  These aren’t ‘bangers’, and are nothing like ‘butchers choice’ varieties from all the major supermarkets and wholesalers.

We very slowly cook them at the beginning of each breakfast (for around 40 minutes on a very low heat), using around a teaspoon of olive oil for 10 large sausages, in a very clean non-stick griddle pan.  Once they’ve cooled slightly, they’re then ‘butterflied’ (sliced carefully down the middle, to open up into a shape resembling butterfly wings), and then finished off for around 8 minutes on another low heat, to slightly crisp up the middle and the skin (it also often leaves a nice cross hatch patter if you turn them over).

Our Apple Juice

Even our apple juice is produced and pressed locally (in West Sussex).  Again, with no additives, artificial flavours, colours, preservatives, etc.  This is another supplier we gained from the monthly Farnham Farmers’ Market.  It’s really great juice, and can be served at room temperature (only chilled after opening).

Even our Water

We’ve done away with importing foreign bottled water.  We actually filter our water on the premises (which takes 10 hours to very slowly drip through our multistage gravity fed filter, made by Eva).  We then bottle it in sterilised HdV branded bottles, and provide it free in all our guest rooms, and in the guest fridge available 24/7.

Our breakfasts

All of these locally sourced ingredients, expertly prepared fresh to order, enable us to hold the rare title of a ‘Surrey Hills Breakfast’.  There of course other components to our breakfast that also have the same amount of practise, care, selection and detail, in how it’s sourced and made.  It’s the reasons people rarely use the condiments requested before eating (i.e. ketchup and HP sauce), why our breakfast plates are almost always returned empty, and they are some of the many reasons so many guests just keep on coming back to us again and again and again.

Accommodation near Bourne Wood

Hotel de Vie is well placed to be situated just a few miles from Bourne Wood, also known as Bourne Woods.

Bourne Wood is a location currently rented to Pinewood Studios, enabling them to film various outdoor scenes, build mock castles, etc..

Some of the numerous blockbuster movies filmed at Bourne Wood, include scenes from Harry Potter, Gladiator, Robin Hood, Snow White, Thor, etc.

It has been utlised for for more than 12 years at various times.

As a semi-public area, it’s still possible to walk through the area where filming is going on (although of course they prefer you to keep off the sets).

As a hotel though, we often get various people involved in the various productions filmed at Bourne Wood, including some of the on-screen stars, editors, sound crew, grips, technical specialists, etc.

The entire hotel can be booked for less than £1,000 per night, which has been utilised in some circumstances to provide an even more exclusive guest accommodation for those involved.

Included in the room rate is also freshly cooked breakfasts, a wide range of quality teas and coffees, and a great selection of fruits and snacks.

If you’re interested in staying with us, please feel free to book now or just get in contact.
